HISTORY BEHIND THE ART
The artwork on the Hungry Kangaroo Mug is more than just a graphic — it’s a visual story of the character Hungry Kangaroo Japangardi Possum and his journey across cultures.
The illustration shows the kangaroo as a cheerful bush traveller, carrying the spirit of Australia while honouring his roots.
His name, Japangardi, comes from a traditional Warlpiri skin-name given to him during a ceremonial fireside meeting in Alice Springs.
His possum totem reflects cleverness, agility and resourcefulness — qualities that guide him on his adventures.
Every element of the design tells a part of his story:
the warm earthy tones represent the Australian bush,
the confident stance shows his role as a storyteller and food explorer,
the friendly expression reflects his mission to connect people, culture and flavours,
the iconic hat symbolises life on Country — where the bush, wind and sun guide the day.
This illustration was created exclusively for Hungry Kangaroo to capture the spirit of the brand:
a little bit Polish, a little bit Aussie, and 100% bush-loving.
The mug isn’t just a cup — it’s a piece of the Hungry Kangaroo world, made to inspire every time you brew your bush tea.
